ON THE ROOM

ON THE ROOM

The Meridian Room is the smallest room the hotel keeps, and the one guests ask for by name. Pale oak, white linen, and a window seat built into the wall beneath a window that faces the garden — which means the room is bright from early and stays that way until the afternoon moves on.

There is nothing surplus in it. A bed, a chair, a place to put a book down and a place to pick it up again. Rooms like this one are harder to design than large ones, and considerably easier to be happy in.

Because it is small, it is looked after closely. The books on the sill are changed with the season, and the window seat is made up each morning with a throw and whatever you left on it the night before — put back where you left it, not tidied away.

It is the room people book alone, for a few days of reading and walking, and the room couples book when they would rather share one good chair than own two. The rest of the house is never far: breakfast in the Orangery, the spa a staircase away, and the quiet bridges of the canal district five minutes on foot.

The Window Seat

The Window Seat

The window seat is the reason to book this room. It is deep enough to sit sideways in, cushioned in the same linen as the bed, and set so the garden fills the frame with no rooftops in it at all. Whatever you brought to read, this is where it gets read.

The Bed

The Bed

A queen bed against the quiet wall, dressed in soft linen and turned to catch the first of the garden light. The room is small enough that everything is within reach from it — the lamp, the book, the window. Nights here are unremarkable, in the way that good nights are.

The Bath

The Bath

The Bath

A compact marble bath, kept deliberately simple: a deep tub, good light, and nothing on the shelf that you did not put there. It does one thing well rather than several things loudly. Mornings take as long as you let them, and the garden is still there afterwards.

The Garden

The garden below is the quietest address the hotel has. It is walled on three sides, planted for scent rather than show, and used by almost no one before ten. From the window seat you have the whole of it — and from the whole of it, no one has you.
