ON THE ROOM

ON THE ROOM

The Obsidian Suite is entered rather than arrived at. The door is heavy, the corridor light stops at the threshold, and what waits inside is darker and warmer than the hotel that leads to it — oak, brass, and lamps set low enough to read by and no lower.

It is a suite that keeps its own hours. Afternoon barely registers here. Evening is when the rooms come into their own, and by midnight the whole floor has gone quiet around you. Nothing in it asks for your attention, which is precisely why it holds it.

The proportions are older than the furnishings. The ceilings sit lower here, the walls are thicker, and the windows are set deep enough to lean in. The restoration kept the timber and changed almost everything else, so the suite reads as old without behaving like it.

It suits the guest who arrives late and sleeps later. Turn-down comes at nine unless you say otherwise, the lamps are lowered for you, and after that no one knocks. Breakfast is brought in whenever the day begins, which in this suite is rarely before ten.

The Salon

The Salon

The Salon

The salon is dressed in dark oak and brushed brass, lit low enough to bring a conversation down to a murmur. Two chairs face each other rather than the window. There is a decanter, and it is kept filled. Evenings that begin in this room rarely leave it.

The bed sits deep in shadowed timber, made up in the heaviest linen the hotel keeps. The blackout is absolute — not dim, dark — and the room holds its temperature through the night without a sound. Guests who sleep badly elsewhere tend to mention this room afterwards.

Black marble, warm brass, and a soaking tub beneath a single considered light. It is a room built for the end of a night rather than the start of a day, though it serves both without complaint. Fill the tub, turn everything else off, and the suite does the rest.

The Courtyard

The windows give onto a courtyard the street knows nothing about — walled, planted, and quiet enough that morning arrives as light rather than noise. It is the only part of the suite that belongs to the outside, and even that has been persuaded to keep its voice down.
